lbemarle County is governed by an elected Board of Supervisors. There are six Board members, one from each of the six magisterial districts in the county. The Board chooses one of the members to be the chairman and another to be the vice-chairman.

The Board is in charge of making land use decisions, establishing growth and development policies, setting operational policies and reviewing and adopting the County's operational and capital budgets. These budgets determine spending priorities. The Board is also in charge of appointing a Planning Commission. This Commission is responsible for helping to develop and guide policies on issues related to long-range development, such as transportation and housing.

Board meetings are held the first three Wednesdays of the month in Room 241 on the second floor of the Albemarle County Office Building. The first Wednesday of the month, the meeting is held at 9:00 a.m. The second and third Wednesdays, the meetings are held at 7:00 p.m.

Taxes

Albemarle County collects Real Estate and Personal Property taxes twice a year. Real Estate tax applies to buildings, homes and property. Personal Property tax applies to vehicles, heavy equipment, boats, etc. The tax rate for Real Estate is $0.76/$100 of assessed valuation and Personal Property tax is $4.28/$100 of assessed valuation. These taxes can be paid at the Albemarle County Office Building, located at 401 McIntire Road. After paying the personal property tax, you will be given an Albemarle County sticker which must be displayed on the front window of your vehicle.
